Be A Partner

Bill’s Story – Technical Sales Representative

Bill Clarke, Technical Sales Representative
Dartmouth, NS
Started at Motion Canada: 1990

What do you like about working at Motion Canada?
The people. Even though I’ve been with the company for almost 30 years, I still remember my first sales meeting and how friendly and helpful everyone was. And it continues today with employees I’ve never even met before. Even just by email we definitely have the “personal touch” down pat.

Have you learned anything cool about yourself while working here?
I used to be somewhat shy and a bit of an introvert, but not anymore! As a sales rep I now have to work to be quiet and listen.

Do you have a success story that you’d like to share?
I worked with SKF on a stock order for a gold mine in my area. The mine was having several problems upon startup last year with bearings, and it turned out that improper sealing and lack of maintenance were the culprits.

While searching for solutions, the mine considered partnering with us and another supplier. But because I brought the local SKF rep with me and took the time to go over the benefits of our sealed spherical bearings, we secured the order! What’s more, they placed another order with us last year, and the amount was almost double their first order.

At Motion Canada, we believe that to be a partner with employees means giving employees what they need to be successful and providing outstanding culture and benefits (among other things!). What does be a partner mean to you?
To be successful as a Technical Sales Rep, training is key since we offer so many products. Motion Canada does a great job of encouraging learning and making it accessible, so on top of regularly improving my skills, I now have a wall of diplomas and certificates to show for it.

Do you have advice for anyone just starting at Motion Canada?
Find an experienced person and learn as much as possible from them. Also, do as much training as you can find the time to do.

What is your favourite “guilty pleasure” song or artist?
Old Time Rock & Roll by Bob Seger

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go any why?
My wife and I are foodies and, since we’ve already been to Italy, I think Spain is next!

You are given one million dollars – what are the first three things you do with it?
Travel, travel and more travel!

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
I used to be an introvert but have turned into an extrovert since working at Motion Canada.

Amanda’s Story – Customer Service Representative, Field Solutions Specialist

What do you like most about working at Motion Canada?
The people and the sense of accomplishment I get out of my job every day.

Have you learned anything cool about yourself while working here?
I have learned not to compare myself to others because we are all valuable to the company in different ways. You just have to discover what makes you, “you!” When I started at Motion Canada, I came from a Chemistry/Forestry background and was a bit overwhelmed by the knowledge people had at our branch. But I didn’t let that stop me. For three months I worked in shipping and receiving so I could learn about the many products going in and out of the warehouse, which was key to build my knowledge base.

Fast forward two years, and now I use my new knowledge plus my forestry background as North Bay’s Field Solutions Specialist! I still have lots to learn, but the one thing that I, and hopefully others, take from this, is to find what makes you valuable to the company and be confident in that. We are each valuable in our own unique ways.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go any why?
The Northwest Territories. I am drawn to this particular spot because of the outdoor adventure opportunities, and I would love to learn more about Indigenous Peoples’ culture and way of life in the area. Plus, I’d have front row seats to the Aurora Borealis – it’s the greatest lightshow on earth!

If you were an ice cream flavor, which would you be and why?
Heavenly Hash – really sweet but totally nuts.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
A little of both.

What do you like about working at Motion Canada?
I am proud to be part of a company with such a long history of leadership in the industry. I love that, through the knowledge of our people and the products we represent, we offer practical solutions that truly help our customers.

Have you learned anything cool about yourself while working here?
The most important things I have learned are that I am a good multitasker, and that I am a bit of a perfectionist. There are many ways this shows up, but one example is that as part the Safety Committee I find myself performing safety checks for the branch, answering questions for others and helping my peers strive for excellence.

I believe that knowing myself well allows me to add a lot of value at work and be of real help to my colleagues. So I think finding your fit in the company is about getting to know who you truly are, and finding a system of getting things done that works for you.

Do you have a success story that you would like to share?
We had a customer who needed a product right away because a critical production line was down, which affects the entire plant and puts everyone behind schedule. Our regular vendor didn’t have the product in stock and to get it would have taken far longer than the customer was able to wait. When the issue came to my attention, I jumped right on it and quickly found a replacement. After speaking with the Account Rep, I learned that this could have cost the customer thousands of dollars, but I was able to save them a lot of time and money and we are now their preferred supplier of choice!

Do you have advice for anyone just starting at Motion Canada?
It will take some time to feel like you’ve got the hang of your role since there is a lot to learn. And that’s ok! Remember everyone has to start somewhere and if you work hard, bring plenty of energy to the job and put your mind to it, you’ll start to grow in your knowledge and abilities. Also, you can learn so much from others, and if you incorporate the ideas and techniques they share, you can go far.

Imagine you are given one million dollars – what are the first three things you do with it?
First, I would buy a Roti Food Truck and use it to help feed the hungry. Then I would invest some and travel to the Caribbean.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert – I like to mingle and people watch. I love meeting new people and hearing their fascinating life stories, and if I’m ever out of town I have so much fun socializing and exploring the local culture and food.
