Sean’s Story – Customer Service Representative

Sean Duke, Customer Service Representative
Hartland, NB
Started at Motion Canada: June 2014

What do you like about working at Motion Canada?
Motion Canada gave me the opportunity to engage both my positive mindset and my past experience to be successful. I have worked a number of industrial jobs in the past and left due to a lack of engagement, but Motion Canada appreciates my willingness to learn and encourages me to draw on my experience in the field to help develop a rapport with people in multiple industries. And being a Customer Service Rep, knowing how to help each and every customer and address their specific needs is key.

Do you have any advice for anyone just starting at Motion Canada?
The world of industrial distribution is constantly changing and growing, so learn to roll with it and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Whether it’s new products or new suppliers for existing products, change is the one constant you can rely on. So it helps to know that you’re surrounded by talented and resourceful people who remember exactly what it was like when they were in your shoes. People are willing to help if you just ask!

Do you have a success story that you’d like to share?
A few years ago, when Motion Canada started really leaning into Field Solutions and Forestry products, our Field Solutions Product Manager held a demonstration at our branch. In that demonstration I learned about hypsometers – a small tool that lets an observer measure the height of an object that’s in front of them (like a tree, for example).

Then about three weeks after the demo, I saw an opportunity on our local government tender website that requested a hypsometer supplier. I would not have known what a hypsometer was if it hadn’t been for that demonstration, but because of my newfound knowledge I was able to land the contract and we’ve continued to supply those hypsometers for almost four years now!

Are you an Introvert or an Extrovert?
I can be both – it depends on the situation. I am mostly an introvert as I like quiet alone time much more than group events where I’m expected to speak with people at length. That being said, I am fairly easy going and am not uncomfortable speaking in front of people. My extroverted self does a good job hiding my introverted self when the need arises!

Have you learned anything cool about yourself while working here?
Since starting at Motion Canada, I’ve discovered that I’m more goal-oriented than I thought, and I’ve learned to set small goals to help me achieve my overall goals. Now, if I want to learn something new or improve upon something, I first do research to better understand what I’m aiming for, and then map out micro-goals that help get me there.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go any why?
I would love to visit Northern Europe. I want to do some traveling outside the Americas but don’t have much interest in beaches or tropical destinations. I’m more of a mountains and woods kind of person. Plus, I’ve always heard the people are nice, the landscape seems breathtaking and the rest of Europe is just a train ticket away. So because of all that, I think Northern Europe would suit me well.
